Happy Antarctica Day!

Did you know that the 1st December is Antarctica Day?

"It deserves to be celebrated as a day of freedom and peace for all mankind, because on that date in 1959 the Antarctic Treaty was signed by 12 nations, setting aside nearly 10% of the Earth forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.  The Antarctic Treaty became planet earth’s first nuclear-arms agreement, and the first institution to govern all human activities in an International Space, a region beyond sovereign jurisdictions. Antarctica Day is a day to recognize this international landmark and the global vision of the twelve original nations as well as all 47 nations who have acceded to the Antarctic Treaty."
Quote from the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists, http://apecs.is/outreach/antarctica-day

Antarctica is a cold desert and an extremely important place in terms of scientific research. There are no permanent residents but scientists from over 28 countries carry out experiments and observations there.

If you're ever in Cambridge, the British Antarctic Survey has it's base there and the museum is very interesting!  http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/
